📰 News we're reading

1. What does the future of public transit look like for Plano? (planomagazine.com) — Plano leaders are moving toward a May 2026 vote on whether the city should leave DART, a decision that could reshape how you get around town and into Dallas. After decades of paying heavily into the system, officials say Plano isn’t getting enough service back and are exploring micro-transit and new funding deals, while residents worry about losing a vital lifeline for seniors, commuters and people with disabilities.

2. Why holiday fun, food and alcohol can be bad for your heart if you're not careful (houstonpublicmedia.org) — A Plano-based cardiologist at Texas Health Plano is warning residents that heart-related deaths spike in December and January, often tied to holiday stress, rich food, and alcohol. He explains who’s most at risk, why quick symptom recognition matters, and how year-round checkups, exercise, and moderation during celebrations can help prevent heart attacks and strokes.

3. Toyota Says EVs Could Rival Nuclear Energy As A Power Source (insideevs.com) — Toyota is testing how electric vehicles at its North American headquarters in Plano can send power back to the grid, potentially supporting local electricity needs during high demand or emergencies. Working with utility Oncor and a bidirectional charger, the pilot explores how future EVs could help stabilize Texas’ grid and even rival nuclear plants in total potential output.

4. Plano students awarded patents for UV exposure monitoring app (planomagazine.com) — Two Plano ISD seniors, from Plano Senior High and Plano East, have earned a U.S. patent for a UV exposure monitoring and alerts app they first developed at a Renner Middle School science fair. Their invention combines sensors, a phone app and personal risk factors to warn users before sun damage occurs, drawing praise from district leaders for their innovation.

5. Texas mandated displaying the Ten Commandments in classrooms. What legal battles ensued? (dallasnews.com) — Plano ISD is one of 25 Texas school districts currently blocked by federal judges from displaying Ten Commandments posters in classrooms under a new state law. Multiple lawsuits from multifaith and nonreligious families argue the mandate violates the First Amendment, and the ongoing court battles could eventually reach the U.S. Supreme Court, shaping what students in Plano classrooms see on their walls.
