Katy ISD To Consider Defamation Suit Supporting Superintendent

The Katy ISD Board will meet in a closed session to discuss a possible defamation lawsuit defending Superintendent Lance Hindt

KATY, TX — The Katy ISD Board of Trustees will meet in a special meeting on Thursday to discuss a possible defamation lawsuit in support of Katy ISD Superintendent Lance Hindt.

Board members will meet in a closed session, and consider the matters discussed when the board reconvenes afterward.

The agenda item does not name any specific defendant, but there will likely be several if a lawsuit is actually filed.

Hindt came under fire in March after Greg Gay, a former classmates of Hindt’s, came forward during a board meeting and accused Hindt of bullying him when the pair were Katy ISD junior high school students in the late 70s.

In the video from the meeting, Hindt was seen laughing, which made Gay angry.

Nonetheless, the incident opened a can of worms for Hindt, with at least one other classmate corroborating Gay’s recollection of the superintendent as a bullying teenager, and the resurfacing of a civil lawsuit filed against Hindt when he was 18, that accused of him of beating a man into a coma.

While the stories circulated, the lines were drawn in the west Houston community that either supported Hindt, or wanted to see him go.

A petition to have Hindt removed was started by a former Katy ISD student, and within days, a rally organized by a Katy ISD teacher was held to bring prayer and moral support to Hindt.

Although Hindt never apologized to Gay or anyone else for his alleged bullying, and never admitted to bullying classmates, he did admit to being young and dumb and doing dumb things, and credited his parents and mentors for helping him to mature and grow.

In the midst of the controversy, both Hindt and Gay have agreed that they’d like to meet in private to discuss the issue.
