📰 News we're reading

1. Attorneys for indicted Sugar Land plastic surgeon say medical board cleared him (houstonchronicle.com) — Sugar Land residents may want to know that a local plastic surgeon has been indicted on a charge of performing surgery while intoxicated, though his attorneys say state medical regulators previously found similar claims unfounded. The doctor, who runs Azul Plastic Surgery in Sugar Land, is free on bond with strict testing conditions, and also faces a separate, ongoing civil lawsuit filed by a former patient.

2. Checks mailed from Sugar Land post office stolen, altered for thousands (khou.com) — Sugar Land residents are being warned after a local man says eight checks he mailed from the Matlage Way post office were stolen and altered for thousands of dollars, the second such case in two months. Banks caught the fraud in time, but law enforcement and financial institutions now urge residents to avoid mailing checks or cash and to switch to online payments when possible.

3. Edward J. and Michele S. Keppler unload 11441 Fm 1464 Road, Sugar Land (houstondaily.com) — A home at 11441 FM 1464 Road in Sugar Land recently sold for $325,392, one of 93 local properties changing hands between late November and Christmas Eve. The sale comes amid a national housing market where prices keep climbing and sellers currently outnumber buyers by a wide margin.

4. Soldier became the first Mexican national to earn the Medal of Honor (militarytimes.com) — Sugar Land has a direct connection to World War II hero Staff Sgt. Macario García, whose family settled here in the 1920s and who later had a local middle school named in his honor. The story traces his journey from migrant farmworker to Medal of Honor recipient, his fight against discrimination back home, and the lasting recognition he received across Texas.
