6 Things To Know About Donald Trump's Latest Media Dustups

Trump's attacks on media became more than just words Tuesday.

Fresh of new attacks on “Bimbo” Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly, Donald Trump has found a new villain: journalist Jorge Ramos, a Univision reporter physically removed from a Tuesday Trump news conference.

He warmed up with Kelly on Monday, when she returned from vacation. Trump went on a Twitter tirade, saying, “I liked The Kelly File much better without @megynkelly. Perhaps she could take another eleven day unscheduled vacation!”

He also retweeted a supporter who called Kelly a “bimbo.”

Then on Tuesday, he had Univision’s Jorge Ramos kicked out of a press conference in Iowa for … asking a question.

Ramos pressed Trump on his staunch anti-immigration plan and was escorted out by security, with Trump sarcastically telling him to “Go back to Univision.”

Here are six things you need to know about Trump’s terse week so far.

Fox immediately jumped to Kelly’s defense

Fox’s leadership there quickly came out against Trump’s antics.

Donald Trump’s surprise and unprovoked attack on Megyn Kelly during her show last night is as unacceptable as it is disturbing,” Fox News chairman Roger Ailes said, according to CNN.

“Donald Trump rarely apologizes, although in this case, he should.”

Fox anchor Jedediah Bila called Trump’s tweets “childish and in poor taste,” and Bret Baier, who anchored the Republican debate with Kelly, said Trump “has made his feelings clear. But THIS needs to stop.”

Trump and Univision already have a tense relationship

Trump is currently suing Univision for $500 million, after the spanish-language channel dropped its coverage of Miss USA and Miss Universe — two beauty pageants that Trump co-owns.

Univision decided in June not to air the pageants after Trump referred to Mexicans coming to the United States as “rapists.”

Trump argues that Univision was contractually obligated to air the pageants.

Ramos is known as a fierce reporter

Trump wasn’t just messing with some no-name cub reporter.

The Washington Post called Ramos “TV’s most influential latino newsman” and said that he has a reputation for being a hard-hitting reporter who goes to bat for his latino audience.

Ramos has been trying to get a sit-down with Trump on immigration “for months,” according to CNN.

On CNN’s “Reliable Sources” Ramos said, “I think Donald Trump is the loudest voice of intolerance, division and hatred right now in America. What he is saying about immigrants and women is not only disgraceful, but dangerous.”

Ramos was actually allowed back into the room

After being let back in, Ramos confronted Trump on immigration, where the two went back and forth.

Ramos pressed him on the feasibility of actually building a wall across the Mexican border, and Trump said building a 95-story tower in New York is harder.

Trump also said he thinks courts would uphold a repeal of birthright citizenship, which is one of the more controversial parts of his immigration plan.

Trump immediately came under fire

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists condemned Trump for initially kicking Ramos out of the press conference.

“Ramos was simply trying to hold a candidate for president accountable for statements he made about a very important topic to the American people,” NAHJ President Mekahlo Medina, said in a statement.

Ramos, too, responded Wednesday morning on Twitter, saying, “I’m a reporter. My job is to ask questions. What’s ‘totally out of line’ is to eject a reporter from a press conference for asking questions.”

But others took Trump’s side

Conservative news outlets predictably jumped on Ramos.

The National Review declared that “Donald Trump Was Right to Kick Jorge Ramos Out Of His Press Conference.” Talk show host Guy Benson said Ramos was just “heckling Trump without getting called on.”

And Joe Scarborough, host of “Morning Joe” on MSNBC, said that Ramos was just “looking for his 15 minutes of fame,” while CNN anchor Chris Cuomo told Ramos on CNN that “It’s [Trump’s] press conference. He runs the rules. You jumped the queue,” according to ThinkProgress.
