9-1-1 To Caller Treating Dying Gunshot Victim: 'Deal With It Yourself'

The victim later died at the hospital.

A 9-1-1 operator has been reassigned after he had a simple message for a frustrated teenager calling about her friend who had just been shot: “Deal with it yourself.”

According to NBC News, 17-year-old Jaydon Chavez-Silver was at a house party in Albuquerque, New Mexico when a gunman opened fire, leaving him severely wounded.

A friend called 9-1-1 and, while on the phone with dispatcher Matthew Sanchez, cussed in frustration over repeated with questions about the victim’s breathing.

Sanchez can be heard saying: “You can deal with yourself. I’m not going to deal with this, ok.”

Chavez-Silver later died at the hospital.

Caller: (inaudible) I’m keeping him alive.

Sanchez: Is he not breathing?

Caller: Barely. (inaudible) Stay with me. Stay with me, ok. Good job Jaydon.

Sanchez: Is he breathing?

Caller: He’s barely breathing. How many times do I have to f---ing tell you?

Sanchez: Ok, do you know what ma’am? You can deal with yourself. I’m not going to deal with this, ok?

Caller: No, he’s going to die.

“After learning of the alleged misconduct ... Matthew Sanchez was immediately removed from the dispatch center and placed on administrative assignment,” Albuquerque Fire Chief David Downey said in a statement, according to NBCNews.

“An internal investigation has been initiated. As the Chief of the department, I am taking the allegation very seriously.”

Update: The New York Times reported that Sanchez quit the department on Wednesday.
