Apply For Your U.S. Passport: Here's Why You Should Do It Now

The State Department says there has been an increasing demand for U.S. passports in recent years. So here's why you should apply now.

If you need a new passport or need to renew your old one, you're better off applying before the end of the year, as the State Department says processing times are shorter from September through December.

The State Department designated September passport awareness month, and reminded Americans of another reason why it's important to have a passport. Starting Jan. 22, 2018, Americans with forms of identification that fail to meet the requirements under the REAL ID Act will be unable to use those forms of ID for air travel. States that are not compliant with the requirements and have not been granted an extension will be in trouble starting next year. (Click here to see if your state is compliant or has been given an extension.)

In order to travel, Americans can use a traditional passport and even a passport card. While a passport card cannot be used for international travel, it is REAL ID- compliant and can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda.
