Bernie Sanders Officially Loses Kentucky To Hillary Clinton After Recanvass

The Vermont Senator called for the recanvass to try to eke out an extra delegate.

Bernie Sanders officially lost Kentucky's Democratic primary to Hillary Clinton after the Vermont Senator asked for a "recanvass" of the state's votes.

Sanders lost the state to Clinton by just 1,911 votes, Kentucky Secretary of State Alison L. Grimes said Thursday. That number is consistent with the state's initial count following last week's voting.

Sanders, who trails Clinton by more than 250 pledged delegates, had called for the recanvass Tuesday to try to win an extra delegate or two. Even if the results had gone his way, Clinton's delegate lead is still nearly insurmountable, and she is on the fast track to the Democratic nomination.

Grimes said that the purpose of a recanvassing is "to verify the accuracy of the vote totals reported from the voting machines."

"The recanvass results become the official results of each county," Grimes said. "The State Board of Elections will certify results on May 31 at 10 a.m."
