UPDATED WITH VIDEO: 1 Dead As Gunman Strikes Mississippi Campus

The victim was a university professor.

A gunman fired on Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, the school confirmed Monday afternoon, killing at least one person.

The University confirmed in a release that the victim was professor Ethan Schmidt, who was killed in his office at Jobe Hall.

The shooter is believed to be tied to a murder earlier in the day in Gautier, Mississippi, according to the Sun-Herald. The suspect in that case, according to WLOX, was identified by local police as 45-year-old Shannon Lamb, an employee at Delta State.

Mississippi Highway Patrol believes the shooter is no longer on campus, according to WMC in Memphis.

Classes have been cancelled for the rest of the day.

Students in nearby school districts were put on lockdown, too.

Delta State is a public University in Cleveland, Mississippi, with a student population of more than 4,000.
