UPDATE: One Dead In Shooting Near Texas Southern University Campus

The shooting was reported Friday afternoon.

One person was killed Friday in a shooting at student housing near the campus of Texas Southern University in Houston.

Another person was wounded, and a “possible suspect is detained,” Houston Police said.

The school was put on lockdown, with staff asked to stay in their offices and students in classrooms, according to a statement from the school. Classes were also cancelled for the remainder of the day, according to the school’s Twitter account.

The shooting happened at 3545 Blodgett St., police said, which is near Courtyard Apartments, a student housing complex near the school’s campus.

“According to one of the witnesses, it was like somebody walked in, walked out, shot, ran,” TSU spokeswoman Eva Pickens told reporters.

It’s the third shooting in just weeks in and around the campus.

One person was injured in a shooting Tuesday night on TSU’s campus. On August 26, two were wounded when a 20-year-old shot a gun into a crowd of people near TSU’s campus.

TSU is located in downtown Houston with an enrollment of 9,700, according to its website.

While the reported shooting was off-campus, it comes amid enhanced sensitivity about the safety on university grounds. One person was killed and three were injured in an early Friday morning shooting at an Arizona college. On Oct. 1, 10 people were killed at a shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.
