Off-Duty Texas Cop Thwarts Would-Be Armed Robbery: Police

Two 16-year-olds walked into a convenience stores with plans for a robbery, but an off-duty cop was in the parking lot, according to police.

Two teenagers tried to rob a Houston convenience store at gunpoint but were stopped when an off-duty Houston Police officer was waiting in the parking lot and jumped into action, according to Houston Police.

The two 16-year-olds walked into a Valero gas station Friday wearing masks, and one of them was armed, police said. One person waited at the door, and the other pointed his gun at the clerk, demanding money, police said.

The officer, identified as “K. Huey,” was working an approved extra job at the time and happened to be in the gas station’s parking lot when he saw the two suspects enter the store, police said.

Huey approached the store, and the suspect at the door alerted the one sticking up the cashier, police said. The suspect with the gun ran towards the door, and Huey fired, police said.

The armed suspect was hit and later sent to Ben Taub General Hospital in critical condition, police said. The other suspect was taken into custody and referred to Harris County Juvenile Probation on a charge of aggravated robbery, police said.

The incident is under investigation by Houston Police and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, police said.
