ACROSS AMERICA — We get that some parts of the country just got done experiencing the hottest weather of the year. You may wish to be back under the heat dome in a few months if the Farmers’ Almanac extended 2022-23 winter forecast pans out.

If it does, plan on it being ridiculously cold.

The Farmers’ Almanac said temperatures could reach a record-breaking 40 degrees Fahrenheit below zero in some areas of the country, especially the North Central United States. But even Gulf states are expected to be chilly, wet and slushy.

Make sure while the weather is still nice that your snowblower is in good working order, too. You'll likely need it.

Active storm systems are expected to bring slush, ice and snow to the eastern half of the country from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast for the first couple of months of winter.

The northern stretch of the Interstate 95 corridor and points west should see more snow, while much of the Southeast will see a wintry mix of wet snow, sleet, ice and freezing rain.

Snow lovers will be happy in the Ohio Valley, Great Lakes states and North Central states, which will see “a fair amount of storminess during the winter season,” according to the Farmers’ Almanac predictions.

Even South Central states could see accumulating snow, especially in early January.

Winter weather is expected to be fairly typical in the Western U.S., though the Farmers’ Almanac predicted above-normal precipitation in the far West and Pacific Northwest, and lower-than-normal precipitation in the Southwest.

When Will It Start Snowing?

Plan on winter starting pretty much on time. The season officially begins with the winter solstice on Wednesday, Dec. 21, and meteorological winter won’t be far behind. Plan on lots of snow and bitterly cold air, the Farmers’ Almanac says. Some key dates:

The Colorado Rockies and Plains could get heavy snow in a storm potentially stretching as far south as Texas and Oklahoma during the first week in January, followed by bitterly cold air.

Around mid-January, the eastern two-thirds of the country are expected to see either heavy rain or snow, also followed by bitterly cold, 40 degrees Fahrenheit below zero temperatures in one of the coldest outbreaks of arctic air in several years.

Although December and January are expected to be cold, near-normal temperatures are expected to return in February.
