Home 101: How To Find A Mason Near You And What It Costs

Bricks and stones could break your bones, and professionals do a better job installing them.

If you have a brick or stone project, big or small, you're going to need to hire a bricklayer or stonemason. A good mason will get the job done right and is more than just a worker. He or she is also an artist.

Masonry can be expensive and messy. This makes it all the more important to find the right person for your project. Here are some tips to consider when you're looking to hire a mason.

Do Your Research

Research the different stone or brick options you think you want to install. There are pros and cons to different materials and, while an experienced mason can give you recommendations, it's good to familiarize yourself with your options in advance.

Compare Rates

Brick masons typically generate their price on a per-brick basis and stone masons will do the same if they're working with similarly sized stones. If the stones are different sizes, a stone mason may charge an hourly or flat rate instead. Ask several masons what they charge and how they'll determine the final cost.

Don't just go with the cheapest estimate. You want to hire a mason who will do the job right. A less expensive mason may be inexperienced and could make a mess of your yard and take longer than necessary. If you aren’t satisfied with the job, you may have to hire a second mason to finish or repair the work of your initial hire.

Look Beyond the Resumé

When you hire someone to paint a portrait, you first ask to see a portfolio with samples of their past work. Hiring a mason is no different! Ask each professional to show you examples and photos of their past work. If a mason can show you a completed project that's similar to yours, that’s even better.

Be sure to discuss project cleanup before the mason gets to work. If he or she agrees that they will clean up job materials, your home or your yard when they complete the job, get it in writing. If the mason's fees do not include cleanup, inquire as to whether you can add these services for an additional fee.
