Indicted Anti-Planned Parenthood Activists Turn Themselves In

David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt were both charged after making undercover videos about Planned Parenthood.

Two activists indicted by a Houston grand jury in connection with undercover videos they made trying to catch Planned Parenthood breaking the law turned themselves in to authorities, according to the Associated Press.

David Daleiden, who faces charges of tampering with a governmental record and prohibition of the purchase and sale of human organs, appeared in a Houston court Thursday and posted $3,000 bond, the AP reported. Sandra Merritt, who also faces the tampering charge, turned herself in Wednesday.

Prosecutors have offered Merritt probation, the AP reported, but her attorneys have not said whether or not she would accept.

The two activists were indicted last week following a Harris County investigation into Planned Parenthood, which centered around videos the two made that they said showed the women’s healthcare selling fetal tissue parts for profit.

Following the investigation, Planned Parenthood was cleared of all wrongdoing, and a grand jury instead handed down indictments on Daleiden and Merritt. The two anti-abortion activists used fake IDs to gain access to Planned Parenthood clinics, and Daleiden created a fake company and sent an email to Planned Parenthood attempting to buy fetal parts, an attorney for Planned Parenthood said.

The Center For Medial Progress, who released the heavily edited videos, has said that the indictments were in violation of Daleiden and Merritt’s first amendment rights.
