A major storm, developing along a cold front that will gain some of its strength from a tropical depression moving across Cuba Saturday, is expected to drench a large swath of the country with rain starting Sunday and into Monday, according to the National Weather Service. The rain is expected along the cold front and some areas, on the backside of the cold front, may see mixed precipitation and even snow.

Much of the Appalachians face a marginal risk for excessive rainfall Saturday and in South Florida, there's a slight risk for heavy rain. The NWS predicts that by Sunday, much of the Northeast and New England will see heavy rainfall and there is a slight chance of flash flooding from eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey to western Maine.

Upstate New York, Vermont, northern New Hampshire and northwest Maine face a moderate risk of flash flooding. The weather service predicts that rain will linger across the region into Monday morning and throughout the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, strong, gusty winds will accompany this weather system.
