Pilgrim's Pride Issues Nationwide Chicken Recall

Pilgrim's Pride Corp. is recalling more than 4.5 million pounds of chicken products that may be contaminated.

More than 4.5 million pounds of fully cooked chicken is being recalled by Pilgrim's Pride Corp. because the chicken may be contaminated with outside materials, officials announced Wednesday.

The recall was issued after plastic, wood, rubber, and metal was found in some chicken products, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The chicken was sold in stores nationwide, the release said.

A recall for the chicken was initially announced on April 7 but only covered about 40,000 pounds of chicken. The recall was expanded Wednesday.

The chicken was produced from August 21, 2014, to March 1, 2016, the release said.

The company started to get consumer complaints about plastic found in the chicken nuggets. After reporting the issue to the Food Safety and Inspection Service, workers found more contamination after getting more complains.

There have been no reports of reactions because of the contamination, and anyone who thinks they might have an injury or illness from the contamination should see a doctor, the release said.

If your chicken is affected, the release says not to eat it and to throw away the chicken. Anyone with health questions can call Consumer Relations Manager James Brown at (800) 321-1470.
