Sir George Martin, 'The Fifth Beatle,' Dead at 90

The Beatles producer died peacefully in his sleep, his management company said.

Sir George Martin, the music producer known as the "Fifth Beatle" for his influential work with the English rock band, died Tuesday at 90 years old at his home in the United Kingdom, his management company said.

Adam Sharp of C A Management confirmed the death in a statement.

"In a career that spanned seven decades he was recognized globally as one of music's most creative talents and a gentleman to the end," the statement said. "The family ask that their privacy be respected at this time."

Martin won six Grammys over a career that spanned seven decades. But his work with the Beatles in the 1960s defined his career.

In 1963, Martin's songs spent 32 straight weeks at No. 1. In all, he produced 30 No. 1 songs in the United States and United Kingdom.

"If anyone earned the title of the fifth Beatle it was George," Paul McCartney said in a statement. "From the day that he gave The Beatles our first recording contract, to the last time I saw him, he was the most generous, intelligent and musical person I’ve ever had the pleasure to know."

Ringo Starr, the other living member of the Beatles, sent his well wishes on Twitter.
