Hillary Clinton Wins South Dakota Democratic Primary

Hillary Clinton can clinch the Democratic nomination Tuesday and fully turn her attention to Donald Trump.

Hillary Clinton has won the New Mexico Democratic primary, several national news outlets, including the AP, have projected.

The win was part of a huge night for the former Secretary of State, who clinched the required delegates necessary to capture the Democratic nomination for president. She can now fully turn her attention toward what will surely be a heated general election against Donald Trump.

Polls are open across the state of South Dakota on Tuesday, when Hillary Clinton is expected to officially clinch the party’s nomination for president after five other states vote that day.

The Associated Press called the race last night for Clinton, after checking in with some superdelegates on primary night eve.

But Bernie Sanders — trailing by hundreds of delegates with just seven states still to vote — didn’t show any interest in giving up just before the day’s voting.

Polls are open in South Dakota from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. South Dakota voters can find their polling place here. The Democratic primary is open to anyone who was registered either as a Democrat or Independent by May 23.

Heading into Tuesday’s voting, Clinton’s lead in pledged delegates over Sanders was 1,812 to 1,521, according to a delegate count from the Associated Press.

The magic number to clinch the Democratic nomination is 2,383. It’s not unthinkable that Clinton could clinch Tuesday on pledged delegates alone, but it would take a strong showing. Factor in her massive superdelegate support — 548 have said they will vote for her so far, the AP says — and she’s likely to be the presumptive Democratic nominee by day’s end.

On the Republican side, of course, Donald Trump has already wrapped up the Republican nomination.

So how will South Dakota vote in this primary?

To say state polling has been sparse would be an understatement.

Patch couldn’t find any sort of credible poll conducted in the state — perhaps no one thought the race would to this far into the primary season, on any side. Many news organizations and pollsters are doing projections for the big Tuesday states such as California and New Jersey.

But for South Dakota, the country will just have to wait and see.
