Tennessee Tourism Helicopter Crash: 5 Dead

The crash happened Monday afternoon near Sevierville, Tennessee.

A sightseeing helicopter crashed Monday afternoon in East Tennessee, killing five people, according to the FAA and The Associated Press.

The FAA's Kathleen Bergen told Patch that the helicopter was "destroyed by fire." Local news images from the scene showed smoke and fire pouring out of the wooded, Smoky Mountains area.

The Associated Press reported that five people died in the crash.

Initial details were not clear.

Bergen said that the Bell 206 helicopter went down near Sevierville, Tennessee, and the FAA was alerted to the crash at around 3:30 p.m. Eastern.

A Sevierville Police spokesman, though, said the helicopter crashed in nearby Pigeon Forge, home of the Dollywood amusement park.
