Twitter Is Killing Vine

Vine announced the move in a blog post Thursday.

The days of viewing six-second loops of video over and over again through Vine will soon be over, according to an announcement the company made Thursday.

Twitter, which owns Vine, will be discontinuing the mobile app but still keeping old Vine videos alive.

"We value you, your Vines, and are going to do this the right way," a short blog post from "Team Vine & Twitter" read. "You’ll be able to access and download your Vines. We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website."

The move would seem to be related to Twitter's push for more video content uploaded directly through Twitter's platform.

The 140-character microblogging platform has incentivized people to post more video by not counting video toward the character limit and purchasing Periscope so people can stream video straight to Twitter.

Twitter has also provided its own free broadcast of several major events such as the presidential debates and Thursday night NFL games, the rights for which Twitter purchased for a reported $10 million.
