ONE-MINUTE QUIZ: See If You Could Enter The U.S. Under President Trump's New Immigration Plan

The legislation President Trump has endorsed would create a points-based system for entering the country and halve legal immigration.

NEW YORK, NY — The Trump administration has endorsed legislation it says would help bring the best and brightest to the United States' shores — but how many Americans would themselves pass the test? Time has constructed a quiz that, while not precisely accurate, gives you a rough idea of how you'd fare trying to enter the country as an immigrant.

Under the Raise Act, which President Trump endorsed last week, the American green card system would shift from a model that largely relies on family relationships to a "points-based system." This model assigns points to would-be entrants designed to favor the talented and the wealthy.

Though it's not a necessary part of a points-based system, the act would also cut the number of new entrants by about 50 percent over the next decade — from about 1 million a year to about 500,000 a year. English language skills, education level, career achievement, anticipated salary level and investment spending are all valued highly under the legislation. Age and marital relationships are also factors in the decision.

So would you make the grade? The guidelines are particularly stringent, and many Americans would not themselves qualify. However, that is part of the point — the Raise Act is designed to restrict immigration to bring exceptional individuals into the country, so it would necessarily exclude most current residents.
