Miami After Hurricane Irma: What's Reopening And Returning To Normal

As the state gets back on its feet after the hurricane, businesses and public services are beginning to reopen.

MIAMI, FL — Amidst the tragedy, loss and destruction spread across Florida in the wake of Hurricane Irma, residents and community leaders are pushing forward and working to return life to normal.

It will take some time before life begins to feel like it did before the storm, but significant progress has already been made. City workers and businesses across the region are putting in overtime to restore their services to the people who need them. Much of the Miami-Dade transit system is operating again and coming close to fulfilling its usual functions. Postal service for the south of Florida is beginning to resume. Seventeen county libraries reopened on Wednesday.

School district officials are overseeing the repairs of the county's public school system, and they hope most or all students will be able to return to class by Monday. PortMiami also announced that it reopened on Wednesday, and the all Miami-Dade expressways have suspended tolls and are safe for travel. Port Tunnel is also open.

County officials have said that water in Miami-Dade is safe to drink. However, if you've lost a significant amount of water pressure since the storm, officials advise that you should boil any water before drinking it.

Garbage collecting in the city of Miami is set to resume on Thursday, as long as trucks can safely access the streets:

The county has provided a map of all the grocery stores that are currently open.

Venue: Menin Hospitality hotels: Mondrian South Beach, Shelborne South Beach, Gale South Beach and Kaskades South Beach.
