President Trump's Approval Rating Has Fallen In Every State

WASHINGTON, DC — Voters across the country are losing faith in President Trump as polls in each state show his approval rating falling, according to new data released by the research firm Morning Consult. Some parts of the country nevertheless maintain a supportive base for the president, but even among his defenders, the enthusiasm for his performance is receding.

Nationwide, 43 percent of respondents approved of Trump in September, according to Morning Consult, while 52 percent disapproved of him. In January, he had 49 percent approval compared to 39 percent disapproval. Trump's net approval — which is the percent who approve subtracting the percent who disapprove — has fallen by a total of 19 points within nine months.

Morning Consult's nationwide polling on Trump's approval is actually on the higher side compared to most other polls. A recent Associated Press poll, by contrast, found Trump with only 32 percent approval, with 67 percent disapproving. FiveThirtyEight, which adds multiple polls up and averages them out, finds 37.8 percent approve of Trump, compared to 56.1 percent who disapprove.

While there is significant variation in the top-line numbers, the underlying message of all the polls over time tells the same story: Trump is losing support.

It's common for presidents to lose support after their inaugurations — but this is usually because they start out with a honeymoon period, where the approval rating reflects the country's hope for the president, rather than a fondness for any concrete policies. President Obama started with a high 63 percent approval rating, according to Gallup, which later shrank.

But Trump never had a honeymoon period. After a bitterly contested presidential campaign, he started his term with less than half the country approving of him.

According to Morning Consult, majorities in 25 states disapprove of the president. In only 12 states do a majority of people approve of the president.

The 10 states with the highest level of disapproval in September according to the poll are:

1. Hawaii — 63.7 percent
2. Massachusetts — 62.8 percent
3. Maryland — 61.9 percent
4. Vermont — 61.6 percent
5. Rhode Island — 60.3 percent
6. Connecticut — 59.4 percent
7. New York —58.4 percent
8. Washington — 58.3 percent
9. Illinois — 58.3 percent
10. California — 58.3 percent

(Washington, D.C., the only non-state listed, disapproves of Trump at a rate of 77.7 percent.)

The 10 states with the lowest rate of approval in September are:

1. Wyoming — 34.7 percent
2. West Virginia — 35.7 percent
3. Alabama — 35.8 percent
4. Louisiana —37.2 percent
5. Oklahoma — 38.9 percent
6. Arkansas — 40 percent
7. Idaho — 40.5 percent
8. Mississippi — 40.7 percent
9. Kentucky — 40.8 percent
10. Tennessee — 41.8 percent
