"We’re going to pay our respects and to see the police who have done really a fantastic job in a very short time," Trump said Wednesday morning. "And yeah they’re learning a lot more. And that’ll be announced at the appropriate time. It’s a very, very sad day for me, personally. Thank you.”

Trump arrived in Vegas just before 10 a.m. local time. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, Sen. Dean Heller and Rep. Mark Amodei also traveled with the president. The president's motorcade drove by the Mandalay Bay hotel, where Sunday's shooting took place, on the way to the hospital.

At the hospital, Trump praised the work of the medical professionals in Las Vegas.

"It makes you very proud to be an American when you see the job that they’ve done," he said.

Trump also addressed the reports Wednesday that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had considered resigning and called Trump a "moron." Tillerson denied the reports, and Trump said at the hospital that he has total confidence in the secretary and that he was "very honored" by the former ExxonMobil executive's statement.

The president arrived at the Las Vegas Police Department Commander Center at a little after noon.

"On behalf of our great country, thank you," Trump said to the police. "It could have been a whole lot worse."

He added: "In the months ahead, we will all have to wrestle with the horror of what happened this week. But we will struggle through it together."
