WASHINGTON, DC — White House officials are investigating the use of private email addresses by staff for government work, according to a report Thursday by Politico. Citing anonymous officials, the report sheds light on administration's response to an issue that dominated the coverage of the 2016 election when Hillary Clinton's use of a private email as secretary of State came under FBI investigation.
Previous reports found that Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law and top adviser, had used his private email account to discuss government business while working at the White House. Using private accounts instead of government addresses to send and receive communications about official business violates record-keeping laws. However, Kushner's lawyers said that he forwarded all work-related emails to his government account, which would preserve them for the public record. Reports suggest other staffers have used private emails and other methods that could also run afoul of recordkeeping laws. Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter and Kushner's wife, used private email to discuss government business before she became an official White House employee, according to Newsweek. And Kushner was recently criticized by the Senate Intelligence committee for failing to disclose his use of a private email account in his recent testimony regarding the Russia investigation, as CNN revealed.
