Matt Schroeder's journalism career began in the days of cut-and-paste layouts, wax machines and typewriters. And now we're here, on the cutting edge of online, mulitmedia journalism. Which makes him old.
Over 15 years in journalism in both Indiana and Wisconsin, Matt has been a sportswriter, sports editor and managing editor for semi-weeklies and dailies of various sizes. Most recently, during a five-year run as managing editor of the Ozaukee County News Graphic, he twice won the C.W. Brown Award for Editorial Writing from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association.
Matt left news journalism in 2007 to become director of public relations for the Milwaukee Wave, where he handled all aspects of communications for the professional indoor soccer team. It was there that he developed skills in video editing, building web sites, public relations and marketing, which he hopes to use to support Patch's vision.
A lifelong Packers fan who has been warming up to soccer for the last 10 years, Matt holds an E level coaching license from the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association. He also recently completed a ComedySportz 101 workshop. Matt lives in Cedarburg with his wife Amy and has four children — Janelle, Liz, Ryan and Josephine (5).
Your Beliefs
At Patch, we promise always to report the facts as objectively as possible and otherwise adhere to the principles of good journalism. However, we also acknowledge that true impartiality is impossible because human beings have beliefs. So in the spirit of simple honesty, our policy is to encourage our editors to reveal their beliefs to the extent they feel comfortable. This disclosure is not a license for you to inject your beliefs into stories or to dictate coverage according to them. In fact, the intent is the opposite: we hope that the knowledge that your beliefs are on the record will cause you to be ever mindful to write, report and edit in a fair, balanced way. And if you ever see evidence that we failed in this mission, please let us know.
Politics
My father and I always solve the nation's political mess every Thanksgiving. It normally requires suspending the liberal-conservative labeling that passes for discourse and instead governing with fiscal prudence and compassion for all.
Religion
I attend St. Joseph's Church in Grafton with my family, but consider faith a very private matter.
Local Hot-Button Issues
Education is of great importance in many suburban communities, and the challenges faced by taxpayers, parents and educators are voluminous and complex.
The proper pace and scope of commercial and development is also something that matters, and all Patch editors will pay attention to these issues.
