100 Best Small Towns In America: 2 VA Towns Make List

VIRGINIA — Two small towns in Virginia have been named among the best in the country, according to a new report.

The travel media company Far and Wide recently ranked the 100 best towns with fewer than 10,000 residents.

The list includes well-known towns across the country — including Harpers Ferry in West Virginia, Rehoboth Beach in Delaware, and Cooperstown in New York — and as well as lesser-known gems such as Monowi, Nebraska. Monowi, with a population of one, has ranked as the No. 1 small town in America.

These Virginia towns made the list:

No. 71. Luray, Population: 4,831

Here's why the travel site says it's a great town: "On any given day, you can see tangled-haired Appalachian hikers looking for supplies and respite in Luray. The town’s geographical position makes it a strategic point for those looking to explore the famous trail as well as the astonishing Shenandoah National Park. The Luray Caverns are the largest cave system on the East Coast."

No. 91. Lexington, Population: 7,320

"Lexington attracts history buffs who are interested in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars. In fact, it was named after the famed Battle of Lexington and Concord," says the travel site. "After a day visiting museums, enjoy the town’s boutique shops and excellent dining scene."

The Midwest and South regions were home to several of the best small towns in America, according to the report. Towns in Nebraska, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Missouri, Alabama, West Virginia, South Dakota, and Kentucky all cracked the top 10.
