Major Pharmacy Chain Closes: What It Means For VA Customers

After more than six decades in business, one of the nation's largest pharmacy chains has shuttered its last stores.

Rite Aid has officially announced on its website that it is now defunct. The last stores have closed five months after the company declared its second bankruptcy in two years.

"All Rite Aid stores have now closed," the company stated on its website. "We thank our loyal customers for their many years of support."

Before its first bankruptcy in 2023, Rite Aid had about 65 Virginia locations.

The company had been the nation's third-largest pharmacy chain behind CVS and Walgreens and had operated about 2,000 pharmacies before its first bankruptcy in 2003. It had about 1,240 stores when the second bankruptcy was declared earlier this year.
