Red, White & You: Honoring Virginia’s Military Heroes

Meet 5 military heroes whose contributions continue to inspire, and nominate a service member or veteran to be featured on Patch!

Virginia has a storied tradition of military service, with countless individuals dedicating their lives to protecting our nation. While words can't fully capture the immense gratitude we feel for our servicemen and women, Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to highlight a few remarkable veterans and active-duty military members from our state. Read about their stories below, and if you know a military hero who deserves recognition, we’d love to hear from you! Simply answer a few questions, and we’ll take care of the rest.


1. Aviation Machinist Third Class Emerson Pell

Emerson Pell, a proud veteran who settled down in Waynesboro, served his country with honor during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army Air Forces, contributing to the efforts of the Greatest Generation. Humble about his remarkable service, Pell recently celebrated his 100th birthday, surrounded by family, friends and fellow veterans at the Salem VA Medical Center, where he was honored for his bravery and lifelong commitment to his country. His story is a testament to the courage and resilience of those who fought in history’s defining conflict, and he continues to be a cherished figure in Virginia’s veteran community. Read more here.


2. Lt. Commander Matthew Morando

Local hero Navy Lt. Commander Matthew Morando proudly served his country before embarking on a new mission to support fellow veterans and raise awareness for military mental health. Following his service in the Navy, Morando took on a remarkable challenge — rowing solo across Smith Mountain Lake to raise funds for the National Center for Healthy Veterans in Altavista, shining a light on the struggles many veterans face while honoring those lost to suicide. His courage and commitment, both in uniform and through advocacy, reflect the spirit of service that continues to impact Virginia’s veteran community in powerful and meaningful ways. Read more here.

3. Curt Bean

Curt Bean, a distinguished Army veteran based in the Charlottesville area, has continued his legacy of service well beyond the military. After his time in uniform, Bean dedicated himself to supporting fellow veterans and strengthening his community through outreach and advocacy efforts with Guitars for Vets, which provides free music lessons and guitars to local veterans. For his efforts, Bean received much-deserved recognition by the American Red Cross as one of Central Virginia’s 2024 Heroes, earning the Services to the Armed Forces Hero Award. Read more here.


4. Staff Sgt. Eugene Malinoski

Eugene Malinoski, a proud local Army and Air Force veteran, has spent a lifetime in service to his country and community. Now 72 years old, Malinoski continues to embody the values of duty and compassion by serving as the commander for the Virginia American Legion, helping fellow veterans navigate life after military service. His unwavering dedication and active role in supporting others show that his commitment to service didn’t end with his time in uniform — it simply found a new purpose in the heart of his Virginia community. 5. Beverly Orange

Beverly Orange, a proud U.S. Army veteran now based in the Roanoke area, has dedicated her life to service both in and out of uniform. After her time in the military, Orange channeled her passion for community and storytelling into writing, publishing a Christmas book, “Beechy Bear Discovers Christmas,” that celebrates the spirit of the season and brings families together. Earlier this year, she published a follow-up story, “Beechy Bear Discovers Easter.” Her journey from soldier to author highlights the enduring impact of veterans in their communities, as she continues to inspire others in Virginia through her creativity and compassion.
