"While other beach towns draw crowds with carnival-like games and vibrant party scenes, Assateague Island is the rare shoreline that’s all about nature. Located just outside of DC, this fairytale-like beach only gets better as the temperatures cool down. Visitors flock here in the summer because it's the picturesque home to wild ponies that roam the sand and salt marshes nearby. People like it so much, many opt to camp right on the beach and spend the night in this paradise, but camping plots go quickly during peak season so you’re better off opting for a September or October trip."
Other sites Thrillist said may be good for fall are Montauk, New York; Yellowstone National Park; Newport Beach, California; Chatham, Massachusetts; Vail, Colorado; Portland, Maine; Shelter Island, New York; Savannah, Georgia; Kiawah Island, South Carolina; Anna Maria Island, Florida; and Newport, Rhode Island.
