2 Face Assault On Law Enforcement Charges In Arlington County: Police

One suspect spat on a traffic enforcement officer and another hit a police officer who was trying to break up a fight, according to reports.

ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington County Police arrested three men in and one woman in connection to two separate incidents of assaulting a law enforcement officer recently

In the first incident, a traffic safety specialist responded around 10:36 a.m. on Saturday for the rapport of a parking complaint in the 1100 block of N. Vernon Street in Ballston.

While the TSS was sitting in their marked county vehicle, a man came up and began yelling and banging on the vehicle, according to ACPD. When the TSS got out of their vehicle, the man spat at them and ran off.

After locating the suspect nearby, ACPD officers took him into custody. Police charged 25-year-old Shereef Abdel-Salam of Burke with assault and battery on a law enforcement officer.

Abdel-Salam was scheduled to be arraigned in Arlington General District Court on Monday afternoon, according to court records.

The second incident occurred around 1:52 a.m. on Monday in the 3100 block of Wilson Boulevard in the Lyon Village area.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a large crowd inside a stairwell of business with two people fighting, according to police.

As the officers tried to break up the fight, one of the suspects hit an officer several times before he was taken into custody with the help of other officers who’d arrived on the scene.

While searching the suspect, who was identified as 23-year-old Yancy Alvarado of Germantown, Maryland, the officers recovered suspected narcotics, according to police. He was arrested and charged with assault on police, possession of schedule I/II controlled substance and public intoxication and held without bond.

Two other people who tried to intervene in Alvarado’s arrest were also arrested:

  • Franklin Medina, 31, of Germantown,, was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice and public intoxication.
  • Maya Herman, 22, of Germantown, was arrested and charged with public Intoxication.
