ARLINGTON, VA -- Arlington County police officers were assaulted in two separate incidents leading to the arrest of two men on Sunday, police say.

The first incident happened in the 5500 block of 8th Street S at around 4:03 a.m., when police were dispatched to a report of a burglary in progress, according to a report from the Arlington County Police Department.

"[T]he known suspect was allegedly attempting for the second time that day to gain entry to the victim’s residence," the report states. "An arriving officer observed a male matching the suspect description in a lookout hiding behind a trashcan. The suspect attempted to flee from the yard of the residence by unsuccessfully scaling a fence.

"The officer then issued verbal commands for the suspect to surrender, however the suspect disobeyed the commands and attempted to evade capture by striking the officer in the chest as he ran past to flee the yard," it continues.

Police arrested 35-year-old Duc Truong of Falls Church. Police say they found him in possession of cocaine, and he faces charges of Assault & Battery on Law Enforcement, Obstruction of Justice and Possession of a Schedule I/II Controlled Substance.

He is being held without bond. The officer had minor injuries.

The second incident happened 10:26 p.m. in the 1100 block of N. Vernon Street in the Ballston area. Police found a man in a vehicle who appeared to be intoxicated, the report states.

"The driver was uncooperative and refused to comply with the officer’s commands to stop the vehicle," the report adds. "Once the vehicle was eventually turned off, the driver exited and actively resisted officers’ attempts to place him in handcuffs. A brief struggle ensued, and, with the assistance of additional arriving officer, the suspect was successfully taken into custody."

Police say they found a knife and an open container of alcohol after searching him and the vehicle.

"While at an area hospital being treated for minor injuries and the execution of a search warrant, he allegedly spit on an officer," the report states.

Police charged 20-year-old William Salgado of Alexandria with Assault & Battery on Law Enforcement, Obstruction of Justice, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Attempted Person Under 21 Driving After Illegally Consuming Alcohol and Attempted Drinking While Driving/Open Container.

He is being held without bond.
