Arlington County Election 2019: Voters Choose County Board

Arlington County has key state legislative and local races in Tuesday's general election.

ARLINGTON COUNTY, VA — Voters head to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 5 to decide races for Arlington County Board of Supervisors and School Board. In addition, candidates for state legislative, local sheriff, treasurer, and commissioner of revenue races are on the ballot. Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. Voters in line by 7 p.m. will be able to vote.

The Arlington County Board has two seats up for grab and four candidates vying for them. Incumbents Katie Cristol and Christian E. Dorsey, both Democrats, will try to hold off challenges from independents Audrey R. Clement and Arron O'Dell.

There are several other local races, but in all of them the candidate is running unopposed. Parisa Dehghani-Tafti is the lone candidate for commonwealth's attorney; Elizabeth F. Arthur for sheriff; Ingrid H. Morroy for commissioner of revenue; Carla F. de la Pava for treasurer; and Reid S. Goldstein for school board. All are Democrats except for Goldstein, who is an independent.

Control of the Virginia General Assembly will be decided by Tuesday's election. All 100 Virginia House and 40 Senate seats are up for grabs, and Arlington County has a couple of competitive races out of seven seats.

Democrat Janet D. Howell, the incumbent for the Virginia Senate's 32nd District, faces off against challenger Arthur G. Purves, a Republican who is running on a platform that involves conservative stances on lower taxes, less restrictions on guns, and fewer limits on charter schools. In the 49th District of the House of Delegates, incumbent Democrat Alfonso H. Lopez is being challenged by Independent Terry Modglin, who is running on an anti-abortion platform as well as promoting more green energy solutions.

The three other House of Delegates races and the two other Senate races involve incumbent Democrats who are running unopposed.

An acceptable form of photo identification is required to cast a ballot in Virginia.
