First Phase Of Amazon's HQ2 ranks As 6th Largest Office Project Due For Completion In 2023

ARLINGTON, VA — The first phase of Amazon’s HQ2 in Arlington, known as Metropolitan Park, is scheduled to open in the coming months, making it the biggest office project scheduled for completion in the United States in 2023 outside of New York City.

The top five office projects scheduled for completion in 2023 are in New York City, according to a new report from CommercialCafe.

The 1.2 million-square-foot HQ2 - Metropolitan Park 7/8 is the biggest office project expected to be delivered in the D.C. area in 2023 and the sixth biggest in the country, the new report said.

Metropolitan Park 7/8 is slated for completion in the first quarter of 2023, according to the report.

Arlington also made the cut at No. 13 with HQ2 - Metropolitan Park 6, totaling nearly 914,000 square feet of office space. HQ2 - Metropolitan Park 6 also is slated for completion in the first quarter, although other reports suggest both Amazon projects will be completed this summer.

"Taking a look at entries outside of New York City, the highest-ranking project in the pipeline is Amazon’s HQ2 Metropolitan Park Phases 7/8, located in Arlington, Va.," CommercialCafe said in the report. "The e-commerce giant broke ground on the site in 2020. Three years later — and after a massive endeavor that required excavating 450,000 cubic yards of dirt and placing 200,000 yards of concrete — the 1.2-million-square-foot property is nearing completion."

The Salesforce Tower — also known as Wolf Point South — in downtown Chicago is scheduled for completion in 2023 and ranks in the No. 7 position, just behind Arlington, according to the report.

Last year, Amazon announced layoffs totaling 18,000 jobs, or 1 percent of its 1.5 million global workforce. But Amazon told WUSA9 that the planned layoffs will not affect the progress on the construction of the first phase of HQ2 in Arlington.
