ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington County police charged a 29-year-old man in the death of a three-month-old girl last October, police said Friday.
The medical examiner ruled this month that the manner of death was homicide caused by a blunt force injury to the head.
Jerard Hargrove of Arlington was arrested and charged with homicide and child abuse, police said. He is being held without bond in the Arlington County Detention Facility.

At about 7:20 a.m. on Sept 1, 2022, police were dispatched to the 1000 block of S. Frederick Street in Arlington for the report of cardiac arrest involving a 3-month-old girl. When police arrived, Hargrove reported he was home with the infant when he found her unresponsive, police said.
Medics treated the infant on the scene before taking her to a hospital. The infant remained hospitalized and died on Oct. 8, 2022. Police then began an investigation into the girl’s death.

After the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the manner of death a homicide earlier this month, indictments for Hargrove were presented to and returned by a grand jury, police said.
Police are withholding the name of the girl in accordance with a Virginia law that limits law enforcement agencies from identifying dead juvenile victims of a crime.
The case remains an active criminal investigation, police said. Anyone with information about the incident can contact the Arlington County Police Department’s Homicide/Robbery Unit at 703-228-4180 or ACPDTipline@arlingtonva.us.
