ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington County was named the third most family friendly city in the country in a new ranking released by Opendoor, an online company that buys and sells residential real estate.
Arlington ranked No. 3 due primarily to its highly rated public schools, public transportation and mix of urban and suburban features, according to Opendoor.
Cambridge, Massachusetts, was named the most family friendly city by Opendoor, followed by Cliffside Park, New Jersey.

This is the first time Opendoor has put out rankings for most family friendly cities.
“We found that most family friendly cities like Arlington have quite a few common features — whether that’s a small-town feel or plenty of outdoor spaces to explore,” Opendoor Consumer Trend Expert Beatrice de Jong said in a statement.

According to de Jong, homebuyers considering Arlington can expect: many young professionals, features that make the county walkable and bikeable, lots of restaurants and coffee shops, and many parks such as Rocky Run Park and Lubber Run Park.

Arlington also ranks high due to location next door to Washington, D.C., providing easy access to the Smithsonian and other great museums.
Opendoor said its methodology for the family friendly city rankings is based on analyzing and averaging the number of OpenStreetMap “family friendly” tags that are within three miles of all addresses in a jurisdiction where Opendoor Brokerage operates.
The tags include: bench, community center, drinking water, garden, kindergarten, museum, park, picnic site, playground, school, swimming pool, supermarket and wastebasket.
Founded in 2014, San Francisco-based Opendoor is an e-commerce platform for residential real estate transactions.
