Baseball Bats, Machetes Used In Columbia Pike Attacks: Police

A man was assaulted with baseball bats and threatened with machetes during two separate incidents on the same night, police say.

ARLINGTON, VA — Three men who police say attacked a man twice in the same evening with baseball bats and threatened him with machetes are facing multiple charges, including malicious wounding by mob, according to reports

Arlington County Police responded around 11:43 p.m. on Saturday for the report of a robbery by force in the 4800 block of Columbia Pike. A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was walking in the area, when he was approached by five men, one of whom he knew, according to the incident report.

The four unknown men assaulted the victim with a bat and stole his wallet, before driving off in a vehicle, police say. The victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

After the victim returned to the area around 2:07 a.m. on Sunday, three of the men involved in the earlier incident approached and threatened him with what appeared to be machetes, according to police. The victim fled and called ACPD.

"Upon police arrival, officers located two suspects at the scene and a third suspect near Four Mile Run Trail and took them into custody," according to the incident report. "During the course of the investigation, two machetes and two bats were recovered."

Arlington County police arrested the following suspects, who were held in the Arlington County Detention Facility:

  • Marvin Martinez Ruano, 25, of Arlington, was charged with assault and battery by mob, malicious wounding by mob and robbery. He was arraigned in Arlington General District Court on Monday morning and has a bond hearing scheduled for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, according to court records. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for 11:30 a m. on Oct. 3.
  • Jeffrey Lovos Luna, 29, of Arlington, was also charged with assault and battery by mob, malicious wounding by mob and robbery. Luna was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning in Arlington General District Court, according to court records. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 3.
  • Gustavo Ramirez Flores, 18, of an undetermined address, was arrested and charged with brandishing a machete, assault and battery by mob, malicious wounding by mob and robbery. Flores was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning in Arlington General District Court, according to court records. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 3.

Malicious wounding by mob is a Class 3 felony, which is punishable by a sentence of five to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000, under the code of Virginia.
