Cardinal Elementary, New Stormwater Vault Celebrated At Westover Day
At Saturday's Westover Day, residents toured Cardinal Elementary School and enjoyed the reopened field above a new stormwater vault.
ARLINGTON, VA — A Westover Day celebration was held Saturday on the grounds of Cardinal Elementary School in Arlington, where residents got a chance to take a tour of the school, enjoy the playground and check out the reopened athletic field.
Located next to Cardinal Elementary School, the field sits above where the county built a huge stormwater vault. The field recently reopened after being closed to public use to allow new sod to become well established.
Saturday’s event was hosted by the Highland Park – Overlee Knolls, Tara-Leeway-Heights, Leeway-Overlee and Westover Village Civic Associations, along with the Cardinal Elementary PTA and the Westover Farmer’s Market.

Cardinal Elementary School, which is the former McKinley Elementary School, is located on the site of the former Walter Reed School in the Westover neighborhood. The new school opened in the fall of 2021 in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The former McKinley Elementary School on N. McKinley Road in the Madison Manor neighborhood is now known as Arlington Traditional School.

At Saturday's Westover Day, a food truck provided food to attendees, and Toby’s Ice Cream offered dessert. Live music was provided by Soulfire Band.
The $18 million stormwater vault was built to address flooding issues in Westover. A major flood in the neighborhood in July 2019 caused extensive damage to businesses and homes in the area.
Arlington County marked the completion of the vault with a ribbon-cutting at Saturday's event. The 47,000-square-foot vault is part of the county’s Flood Resilient Arlington program to mitigate the major impacts of flooding.
Across the street from Cardinal Elementary School is one of the homes that Arlington County has purchased to address flooding issues. After agreeing to buy the home for $1.5 million, the county plans to tear down the home and create more green space to help with stormwater management.
