ARLINGTON, VA — A man walking in an Arlington neighborhood was attacked with a metal pole early Thursday morning, police say.

Police were called to the 900 block of S. Buchanan Street at around 12:07 a.m. to a report of an assault, according to a report from the Arlington County Police Department.

"[T]he male victim was walking into a residential building when the suspect approached him from behind and struck him several times with a metal pole," the report states. "The suspect attempted to steal the victim’s personal property, but the victim was able to push the suspect away. The suspect then fled the scene on foot."

The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police set up a perimeter but were not able to track down a suspect. They described the assailant as "a black male, in his 30’s, 5’6” tall with short black hair [who] was wearing a dark colored shirt and beige shorts at the time of the incident."
