ARLINGTON, VA — A man faces assault and drug charges after police say he bit an officer trying to get him out of a vehicle in Arlington over the weekend.

An officer on patrol saw two men behaving suspiciously outside of a vehicle at around 12:40 a.m. on Sept. 14 at the intersection of Lee Highway and N. Pollard Street, according to a report from the Arlington County Police Department.

"Upon seeing the officer, the suspects attempted to flee," the report states. "The officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with Suspect One, when he observed Suspect Two attempt to flee on foot. With the assistance of additional officers arriving on scene, Suspect Two was stopped."

While officers tried to remove the first suspect from the vehicle and detain him, he "actively resisted and bit an officer," the report states.

Police say they later found marijuana and a firearm in the vehicle.

Police also detained the second suspect when he refused to identify himself, the report states.

Police charged 32-year-old Timothy Atwell of Warrenton with assault and battery of law enforcement, obstruction of justice, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of marijuana, while 56-year-old Robert Lane was charged with failure to ID.
