ARLINGTON, VA — The Arlington County Police Department said Tuesday that its officers are investigating an apparent drug overdose at Wakefield High School.

Shortly before 9:30 a.m., a student was found unconscious in a school bathroom at the high school in South Arlington. Medics administered emergency medical aid before transporting the boy to an area hospital.

The boy remains hospitalized in critical condition, police said. Four other juveniles were evaluated at the school by medics for possible drug overdoses, according to police.

Students were held in their second period classes at the request of police as the incident was investigated, WJLA reported.

Officers collected evidence and spoke with witnesses. Based on the preliminary information, the incident is being investigated as an apparent drug overdose, police said. Under Virginia law, police are not releasing the age of the student who was taken to the hospital.

In a letter to parents of Wakefield students, the school’s principal said staff took immediate action and called for medical assistance when the student was found unconscious in the bathroom.

“Students are being held in their second period classes at the request of the Arlington County Police Department as they continue their investigation into the medical emergency,” the principal wrote in the letter.

Students were dismissed at 12:30 p.m. due to the medical emergency. All after-school and evening activities, including sports, were canceled, Fox 5 reported.
