ARLINGTON, VA — The Turkey Trot. It's an increasingly popular way to start Thanksgiving. Although some happen the weekend before Thanksgiving, it's the Thanksgiving morning trots we've got our eye on, including the 12th annual Arlington Turkey Trot 5K.

Hosted by the Christ Church of Arlington, the event raised $100,000 for five beneficiaries in 2016.

This year, the race will race money for Arlington Food Assistance Center, Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network, Arlington Thrive, Bridges to Independence, Offender Aid and Restoration and Young Life South Arlington.

Over 4,000 participants are expected to participate in the Arlington Turkey Trot. Thanksgiving is now the most popular day for road racing. According to a recent study by Runners World and the RunKeeper app, it caught up to and passed July 4 some six years ago in terms of popularity. New Year's Day is apparently the third most popular day to run a race.

The race kicks off at 8 a.m. at the Christ Church of Arlington, located at 3020 N. Pershing Dr.
