Weather Forces Arlington Schools To Change Jan 8 Schedule

Weather has prompted Arlington County Public Schools to change its schedule for Monday, Jan. 8.

(Updated at 2:30 p.m. Monday): ARLINGTON, VA — With the area under a winter weather advisory late Monday afternoon, all Arlington County Public Schools will close two hours early Monday, Jan. 8, officials said.

All schools and offices will close two hours early, while the Extended Day Program will stay open until 4 p.m., officials said. Extracurricular activities, interscholastic games, team practices, field trips, adult education classes and programs in schools and on school grounds are canceled.

County Government offices remain open, though some programs and facilities will close early, officials said.

Officials announced these schedule changes Monday afternoon:

  • All Enjoy Arlington classes, 55+ classes and nature center programs in all buildings are cancelled.
  • DPR Elementary Afterschool Programs are cancelled.
  • DPR Teen After School Programs will proceed as scheduled.
  • Sports activities, leagues and instructional programs in APS buildings are cancelled.
  • Sports league activities in County facilities are cancelled.
  • Community Centers are open (including joint use facilities located at Drew, Carver, Gunston, Langston, and Thomas Jefferson) but officials will continue to monitor the weather situation.

Arlington County and the surrounding area are under a winter weather advisory beginning at 3 p.m. through 9 p.m. The Monday forecast calls for a wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet. Commuters should be aware of slippery conditions on sidewalks, roads and bridges.

The advisory applies to central DC, Prince William County, Manassas, Manassas Park, Fairfax County, Falls Church and Alexandria.

The forecast indicates normal rain could continue at night. Tuesday is expected to thaw out the area with sunny skies and a high of 45.
