Wexton, 56, had announced she would not seek re-election due to her Progressive Supra-nuclear Palsy diagnosis, which is a severe form of Parkinson's disease. Subramanyam and Clancy had won their parties' primaries to set up a general election faceoff for the competitive district.
Virginia's 10th Congressional District covers all of Loudoun County, the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park, Fauquier County, Rappahanock County and parts of Prince William and Fairfax counties. The Virginia Public Access Project considers the district to be a competitive race, while the Cook Political Report labels the district as a 6+ sold Democrat district.
Before Wexton had defeated Republican incumbent Comstock in 2018, the 10th congressional district had been represented by Republicans since the 1980s.
Subramanyam is a current Virginia state senator representing part of Loudoun County and has outlined campaign priorities like protecting abortion rights, gun safety restrictions, health care access and affordability, environmental protection and more. Subramanyam has been endorsed by Wexton, along with the district's former Republican representative Comstock.
Clancy, who has been a lawyer and business executive, has campaign priorities including addressing inflation and boosting the economy, addressing border security, fully funding law enforcement, supporting gun owner rights and more. Clancy had unsuccessfully sought the party's nomination for the 10th congressional district in 2022 before winning more than 60 percent of the vote in the 2024 Republican primary.
Subramanyam outraised Clancy with over $2.6 million to $1 million, according to the latest campaign finance report by the Virginia Public Access Project.

For example, he is concerned China will invade Taiwan and that a war could result in a draft affecting Americans. He says Clancy and Senate candidate Hung Cao are veterans and former President Trump has supported a strong military policy. Other issues he highlighted are border security and the economy.
"My three children have children. I don't know how my son does it," Cole said, speaking about his son who lives with his girlfriend and kids. Cole says he helps his son out, but "they can hardly afford to feed the kids."
