The First Responder’s Monument in Purcellville, dedicated in 2011, includes a steel beam from Tower Two of the World Trade Center and stone from a barn near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed.

At least 2,973 people lost their lives in the attacks, between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia and the hijacked plane that crashed in a Pennsylvania field. The somber anniversary is marked across the country with memorial services, moments of silence and community events.
