About 200,000 Virginians Could Be Ineligible to Vote

New data from the Virginia State Board of Elections suggests more than 200,000 Virginians may lack proper photo ID required to vote.

About 200,000 Virginians may not be able to vote in November’s midterm elections from lacking proper photo identification, according to the Virginia State Board of Elections.

A strict voter ID law passed in 2013 now requires Virginia voters to present a driver’s license or some other form of photo ID at polling stations before casting a vote, The Washington Post reports. This can include a U.S. passport, a Virginia college or university photo ID card, an employee ID card with a photograph, or any other form of government-issued photo ID.

Voters without a proper photo ID can either obtain a free voter ID card (by proving their eligibility at any local registrar’s office) or fill out a provisional ballot. Ballots cast with a voter ID card are easier to count in the event of a close contest, according to election officials.
