LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — If a small pet like a rabbit is the kind of companion for you, some bunny may be waiting for you at the Loudoun County Animal Services Animal Shelter.

The animal shelter received a record 43 rabbits at once from a Loudoun County resident on Friday. All of the rabbits are up for adoption, so the animal shelter is seeking immediate adopters. The Loudoun County Animal Shelter's wish list has been updated to seek items for rabbit care.

According to the animal shelter, the resident who surrendered the rabbits initially brought three rabbits. But those rabbits didn't take long to multiply.

"Rabbits really can multiply incredibly quickly, and they start reproducing at just four months of age," said Animal Shelter Operations Manager Melissa Heard. "In addition to significant health and behavioral benefits, this really demonstrates why spay and neuter of all pets, including rabbits, is so important."

The animal shelter is working to spay or neuter the 43 rabbits. After that, they will be ready for adoption.

For those not familiar with rabbit care, the animal shelter is hosting a free "Rabbits 101" course on April 18 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Attendees will learn about how to care for a rabbit and will receive a voucher for a rabbit at no cost.

Others who do not attend the course can adopt a rabbit for a special fee of $25 with an "adopt one, receive a second free" promotion.

Interested adopters can view rabbits at loudoun.gov/animals and visit the animal shelter during adoption hours daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The animal shelter is located at 42225 Adoption Drive, Leesburg, VA.
