Another Special Election Planned As Loudoun Delegate Runs For VA Senate
Del. Kannan Srinivasan is vacating his Virginia House seat to run for Virginia Senate, prompting a second special election.

ASHBURN, VA — A second special election will happen in parts of Loudoun County as a state delegate runs for a Virginia Senate seat.
Del. Kannan Srinivasan (D-Loudoun), who represents part of Loudoun County in the 26th House District, announced his resignation as he runs for the 32nd Senate District seat. The Senate seat is available as state Sen. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Loudoun) was elected to the 10th Congressional District. Srinivasan was elected to the 26th House District in 2023.
Virginia House Speaker Don Scott said he received Srinivasan's resignation and ordered a special election on Jan. 7, 2025 to fill the vacancy. That is the same day of the 32nd Senate District special election between Srinivasan and Republican Tumay Harding. The candidate filing deadline for the 26th district race will 5 p.m. on Nov. 25.

The Loudoun County Democratic Committee is holding a caucus to determine its nominee for the 26th House District. The caucus will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23. Democrats who are registered to vote in the 26th House District are eligible to vote in the caucus and must fill out a voter eligibility pledge.
Candidates have until 8 p.m. Tuesday to file to run in the caucus. Loudoun Now reported that School Board Vice Chair Arben Istrefi of the Sterling District and Loudoun County Democratic Committee Treasurer JJ Singh are running. Singh previously worked for the White House Office of Management and Budget and is now president of Retreat Hotels and Resorts.

The locations for the caucus are:
- Liberty Elementary School, 25491 Riding Center Dr, South Riding, VA 20152
- Creightons Corner Elementary School, 23171 Minerva Dr, Ashburn, VA 20148
- Possible additional location to be announced
The Loudoun County Republican Committee held a caucus Sunday to choose its nominee. As reported by Loudoun Now, the party selected Ram Venkatachalam, who was previously chair of Loudoun County's Transit Advisory Board, ran for Little River District supervisor in 2023 and was recently appointed by Gov. Glenn Youngkin to the Science Museum of Virginia.
The 26th House District is labeled as strong Democratic by the Virginia Public Access Project. It covers neighborhoods like Brambleton and South Riding in the southeastern part of the county.
