Ashburn, Loudoun November General Election Voter Guide: Candidates, How To Vote

ASHBURN, VA — Sept. 20 marks the start of early voting for the Nov. 5, 2024 general election, which features federal races for Ashburn and other Loudoun County voters to decide. Loudoun County will have president, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, a Virginia constitutional amendment and Loudoun County bond questions on the general election ballot.

In addition, town elections will include Hamilton Town Council, Hillsboro mayor and Town Council, Leesburg mayor and Town Council, Lovettsville mayor and Town Council, Purcellville mayor and Town Council.

What's on the Ballot

Many ballots in Loudoun County will be the same, except the towns of Hamilton, Hillsboro, Leesburg, Lovettsville and Purcellville with town elections.

In the 10th congressional district, Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-Loudoun) is not seeking re-election after receiving a progressive supra-nuclear palsy diagnosis. Democrat Suhas Subramanyam and Republican Mike Clancy won their party's primaries and will face off in the general election.

According to the Virginia Public Access Project, the 10th congressional district is a competitive district up for election. The district covers Loudoun County, part of Prince William County, part of Fairfax County, Fauquier County, Manassas City, Manassas Park City, and Rappahannock County.

The bond questions on the ballot focus on the county seeking bonds to fund school projects, public safety projects, parks and recreation projects and transportation projects.

Virginia Constitutional Amendment Question

Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended so that the tax exemption that is currently available to the surviving spouses of soldiers killed in action is also available to the surviving spouses of soldiers who died in the line of duty?

School Projects Bond Question

Shall the County of Loudoun, Virginia contract a debt and issue its general obligation capital improvement bonds in the maximum principal amount of $10,000,000 to finance, in whole or in part, the design, construction, equipping and other costs of LCPS FaciIity Renewals and Alterations and the costs of other public school facilities as requested by the Loudoun County School Board?

Public Safety Projects Bond Question

Shall the County of Loudoun, Virginia contract a debt and issue its general obligation capital improvement bonds in the maximum principal amount of $9,669,000 to finance, in whole or in part, the design, construction, equipping and other costs of Fire and Rescue Capital Apparatus and Fire and Rescue Station #08 - Philomont Station Replacement; and the costs of other public safety projects approved in the County's Capital Improvement Program?

Parks and Recreation Bond Question

Shall the County of Loudoun, Virginia contract a debt and issue its general obligation capital improvement bonds in the maximum principal amount of $53,787,000 to finance in whole or in part, the design, construction, equipping and other costs of, the Western Loudoun Recreation Complex, Dulles South Community Park, and the Westpark Improvements; and the costs of other public parks, recreational and community center projects approved in the County's Capital lmprovement Program?

Voter Registration

The deadline for voter registration or updating your address is Oct. 15. Same-day registration with a provisional ballot will be offered from Oct. 16 through Election Day, Nov. 5. Residents may register, update their registration or check their registration status through the citizen portal at vote.elections.virginia.gov.

Residents may also download a paper application and mail it to Office of Elections, 750 Miller Drive SE, Suite 150, Leesburg, VA 20175 or register at a Virginia DMV location.

How to Vote Early

Voters may choose to vote early in person, request and submit a mail-in ballot or vote in person on Election Day.

Early in-person voting starts Friday, Sept. 20 at the Office of Elections in Leesburg- 750 Miller Drive, Suite 150, Leesburg, 20175. An acceptable form of ID is required to vote in person.

Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, except on Oct. 14. Extended hours will be offered until 7 p.m. on Oct. 22, 24, 29 and 31. Saturday voting will be offered on Oct. 26 and Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Satellite early voting locations will open from Oct. 21 to Nov. 2 at Carver Senior Center- 200 E Willie Palmer Way, Purcellville; Claude Moore Recreation Center- 46105 Loudoun Park Lane, Sterling; and Dulles South Recreation Center - 24950 Riding Center Drive, Chantilly.

To vote by mail, the easiest way to apply for a ballot is online through the Virginia Department of Elections citizens portal. Voters will need their Social Security number and a Virginia Driver's license or Virginia DMV-issued ID number. Voters may also download a paper application and return it by mail to Office of Elections, 750 Miller Drive SE, Suite 150, Leesburg, VA 20175.

The deadline to request a mail-in ballot will be 5 p.m. on Oct. 25. Completed ballots must be returned to the Office of Elections by 7 p.m. on Nov. 5 or postmarked by Nov. 5 and received in the office by noon on Nov. 8.

Voters may return their completed ballot by mail or a drop box. Ballot drop boxes will be available at all early voting sites during voting hours and polling places on Nov. 5, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. A 24/7 outdoor drop box is available outside the Office of Elections at 750 Miller Drive, Suite 150, Leesburg, VA until 7 p.m. on Nov. 5.

How to Vote on Election Day

Election Day voting is available at a voter's assigned polling place. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5. An acceptable form of ID is required to vote in person.

Voters may confirm their polling place through the Virginia Department of Elections citizens portal. The Office of Elections also has a polling place lookup in Loudoun County.

After polls close at 7 p.m. on Nov. 5, preliminary election results will be tallied on the Virginia Department of Elections website. Patch will provide coverage of the 10th congressional district race, as well as other key races in Northern Virginia.
