Ashburn Man Fatally Shoots Self At Hospital In Fairfax: Police
An Ashburn man died after shooting himself inside Inova Fairfax Hospital Tuesday night, according to Fairfax County Police.
ANNANDALE, VA—An Ashburn man died after shooting himself inside Inova Fairfax Hospital Tuesday night, according to Fairfax County Police. Thomas Wimmer, 64, was taken to the hospital's trauma center and died a short time later.
Officers were called to the hospital's Heart and Vascular Institute around 8:47 p.m. for a report of a patient with a gun. The man shot himself at least once before police arrived. Police found the man alone in a hospital room refusing to give up his gun. Officers worked to "peacefully de-escalate the situation," and they entered the room to provide medical aid an hour later.
No one else was injured. The medical examiner will be performing an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
