Cooling Centers Open In Loudoun As Temperatures Soar

Loudoun County's libraries, community centers, and recreation centers will be open as cooling centers on Thursday as temperatures soar.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — Several cooling centers will be open on Thursday in Loudoun County after the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the region.

Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s and the heat index will likely surpass 100 degrees on Thursday, experts said. The National Weather Service has also issued an excessive heat watch through 8 p.m. on Friday.

In Loudoun County, cooling centers open whenever the National Weather Service issues a heat-related alert. Recreation centers, community centers, and libraries will all be open to the public with air conditioning.

The county's animal shelter is also available as a pet-friendly cooling center.

The facilities will be open during normal business hours.

"Loudoun County officials advise residents to be prepared and take precautions to prevent heat-related illness, including spending as much time in air-conditioned locations as possible during periods of excessive heat," the county said in a news release.

County officials urged residents to hydrate, wear loose clothing, and avoid any strenuous work outdoors. Residents should also keep an eye on their pets, check in on neighbors, and monitor the forecast.
